I consider myself to be fairly pedantic when it comes to correctness in grammar, at least in the context of formal communication. For me, aside from clarifying certain ambiguities, grammar and punctuation layers tone over written communication, something which is otherwise not present. I've always considered it a priority to write and speak in a proper fashion, which I think has carried over into my studies of other languages and made me more hesitant to practice speaking even in fairly casual settings.
Concerning a goal for punctuation and grammar... I certainly think I have a long ways to go. I'm still not always certain about proper punctuation placement around quotation marks and parenthesis, and the appropriate use of brackets ([]) (lol). Another thing I've been thinking about when it comes to my writing is my copious use of semi-colons; even my stepmother, who is herself a technical writing professor on the east coast, has noted in my writings that I tend to rely on its incredible powers of cohesion and conjunction a bit too much. This was one of the reasons why I volunteered to address that particular item in my presentation. The trouble is that I already mostly knew how to use it correctly, but I'm still looking for potential alternatives and a more general sense of effective frequency of its use. I'd say I've gotten better over the years, and I anticipate my progress in this regard will continue its trajectory as I continue to write in my various life callings.
